TOP 12 : FROM FIRST TO LAST

It’s the end of June 2004. High school starts in roughly a month in Maryland. From First to Last, the band that first caught my attention that year on the Warped Tour Compilation CD (a landmark release in its own right) with “Note to Self,” has just released their debut full-length, Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Body Count, thus beginning my (now) 22-year love affair with the band. Though the band hasn’t released all that many albums since Dear Diary… (there have been 5 full-lengths and 2 EPs), From First to Last has remained one of my favorite and most played bands.

This year, From First to Last finally returned with a new EP release: We Were Bleeding Anyway, featuring Lil Lotus as their new lead vocalist. It may not be a full-length (or feature the awesome “Mirror Soul” single) but it’s very fucking good, nonetheless. Like a flashback to Aesthetic, We Were Bleeding Anyway feels like the early 2000s screamo scene that we all fell in love with as teenagers. Lil Lotus is a great fit for the band, the instrumentation is circa self-titled era, and the band manages to evoke enough emotion in just 6 tracks that this EP almost feels like a full-length. It’s powerfully written and performed, making for the band’s best work in years.
